100 Mile House to Hyder, Alaska

My neighbors are MG fans...

I'm off to Smithers, a 430 mile ride. About noon time
I'm getting hungry, I have some raisin rolls and juice, I just need a quiet spot to eat. As I'm riding by  I barely see this sign, I turn around and stop at the edge of the pavement. Hmmm...no mention of how many miles of dirt road to the falls. Oh well, off I go - it turns out to be just over 3 miles of dirt.

 Then a 1/4 mile hike,

And here it is....

Hike back,

My humble repaste. Life is good!
In Smithers where I'll stay the night.

Outside my hotel.
This ones for you Cluff.

I'm on the road by 8:00
Hyder is 207 WET miles away.
Some of my rain gear crapped out on me today, I was soaked and chilled by the time I got to my lodging.

What?!? I have to ride across this soaked wooden bridge?

Yep! Two different ones.

The glacier before Stewart.

Stewart BC. As I was turning a U-ey to get this pic I waved at this little guy. He ran along the 'sidewalk' beside me excitedly waving back!
(then in true little kid fashion, when I pointed the camera at him he stood still, hands down...)

And....Hyder, Alaska.

I'm staying in a B&B, this is Mottley, he likes chilling outside my door.

The glacier about 15 miles out of Hyder.

Waterfalls everywhere!

Seafood for dinner.

The marker for the borderline.

More Hyder buildings.

Tomorrow - 437 miles to Prince George. With lousy rain gear it could be a loooong day.

Hyder, Ak. to Cache Creek BC

In Hyder I stayed at Kathy's Korner Bed and Breakfast. Normally I'm not a B&B kind of guy, but I would stay here again. Kathy and Ron are awesome and are fun to talk to.
One thing...make sure you request some of Kathy's banana bread for the (cold only) breakfast. I ate a half a loaf for breakfast then raved about it so much that, at Ron's prodding, she sent me off with the other half for 'road food'!
And I DID enjoy it on the road!
Also in the above pic is Mottley, their lab. As Ron was pouring Mottley's breakfast bowl I walked  into the room.  Mottley left his food to come over and hang out with me for a while...Ron said he has NEVER seen Mottley do that before. You gotta love labs!

Barely across the border, I'll be riding in fog for quite a few of miles.

Clearing up and not even raining for several miles.

Hello Mr Bear!

And it's raining again, hard.
I increase my layers. Did I mention that it was raining?
100 miles into the day and my boot and gloves have totally failed. I'm cold and getting colder. I've had the boots for about 15 years, and the gloves for well over 5 so I guess I got my use from them.

So what did I do...?
I stopped at the Harley dealer in Smithers  - 207 miles into my ride, which is about half of the miles I need to do today.
I think I was the only customer at the time, everyone else is smart enough to get out of the rain.

This is Chelsey and her dad Steve, the owner. Chelsey works for her dad, but trust me she is no skater. Her product knowledge, and ability to assess and fill the customers needs is impressive. I went in grouchy, wet, and cold and came out happy (but poorer), warm and dry. She even offered to sell me a bike with a heated seat and heated grips...

If your ever in Smithers,  BC stop in and tell Chelsey HellooOOooo for me, and ohhh what the hell, if Steve is there tell him hi too.
Does the Nomad behind us look familiar?

Rest and "road food" stop; the other half of Kathy's banana bread loaf was a great snack!

I make it to Prince George, I have a reservation at the Travel lodge.

My ride plan after Prince George was to next go east to the Calgary/Alberta area, then ride south to North Dakota. But,from the time I left Hyder that morning until late into the night I had had this nagging feeling that I should ride straight south to the border instead of following my original plan.
I had emailed family telling them that I would be following my plan and heading east the next day, but the nagging feeling got stronger. Finally, late at night I emailed again and told them, I'm bagging North Dakota and heading straight south to home. As soon as I did that the bothersome feeling went away.

meanwhile...
My bike is filthy so after I get my stuff up to my room I return to the desk and ask for some worn out towels or bike rags....
"Sorry, we don't have any." He says.
I thought, are you kidding, no bike rags?!
So I said out loud, "Are you kidding, no bike rags?!"
He said I could go to Walmart and buy some micro fiber cloths....

No thanks, I had a better idea and got on the net and searched 'used clothes'
and Praise the Lord, say Hallelujah!...
......this just happens to be right around the corner.
St. Michael's Thrift shop.
I go in and buy three kid sized white shirts for 3 bucks.

The dirty bike..

The shirts and cleaner...

The not perfect, but MUCH cleaner bike...

So, no bike rags, my deadbolt didn't work and the parking situation stunk big time. All in all - Travel Lodge in Prince George - I won't be back.

meanwhile...
As I mentioned before I had that nagging feeling that I should head straight for the border rather than go east to Calgary/Alberta area and as soon as I made the decision to do that I felt much better.
so...
Today I was about 100 miles into my ride (south) when I stopped at the town of Quesnel for some lunch. I finished eating and was gearing up when a man and woman approached me and started the 'where you been, where you going' conversation. Turns out he rides a GS and she a cruiser, so I take out my ear plugs and enjoy the chat.
But then when I mentioned I had changed my plans from going to Calgary - he became quite excited and told me "No! No! Don't go there or anywhere near! That's where the eye of the storm is! " (I assume that would be the storm that had drenched me for the last two days.) He went on to tell me that there had been several mudslides, numerous road closures, "flooding all over" and some of the  towns had initiated their Emergency Action Plans....
OOOkieDokie...I guess I made the right call.

So after lunch I'm on my way SOUTH again.

I stop at William Lake for petrol and a snack.

I make it the 280 miles to Cache Creek...looks like the sign is a duplex for some little rodents.

Where I'm staying - cheap but very clean, I would stay here again.

Aaaaaaaand I made it just in time, it's raining again! Good thing I cleaned my bike eh?

This has been a super ride! I should be back into the States tomorrow - going in via Osoyoos.

Cache Creek, BC to Home

When I leave Cache Creek it's raining.... SurrrrPRIZZZZE!!
So I don't even take out the camera until I see these "tree quilts"  (my words) in Merritt.
Also in Merritt; painted pictures of locally famous people perhaps? But notice some of them have been painted over... Maybe those folks have lost public favor? Hmmm...
Somewhere along this route, I stop at a pull out for two reasons,
1 -  I need to get my helmet off for a few minutes, and..
2 -  I need to relieve some "pressure..."
There are a couple cars approaching from the opposite direction, and I'm waiting for them to get out of sight before I, well you know.
Then another car pulls over and stops behind me, the middle of the cars grill is lined up on the rear end of my bike, the car is quite close considering that's it's just the us two and it is a large pull out, it might be 3 feet behind my bike.
I make a quick glance and see it is an older woman. Then I go back to savoring my red licorice, and anticipating this woman leaving so I could complete my reason for stopping. But....she stays there in her car.
Are you kidding me?
It's just us two...no other cars in sight or hearing, and my need builds.
Then she finally exits the car, I glance again and quickly recognize she is in distress. "Do you need some help?" I ask.
"No" she says, "I just have this darn cramp in my hip, I was lucky to get the car stopped......"
I glance again at the closeness of our vehicles...

I offer her a calcium pill, but she declines stating her summer home is nearby and she has some meds there.
Then she leaves..........JUST. IN. TIME!

On I go, to the road between Merritt and Princeton.
The flag lady tells me the heavy rains caused this slide. The workers are jack-hammering to knock down potential future sliders.

Then as we are waiting for the go ahead to drive through the slide area, I see a car pull up behind me and it is....you guessed it, Hip Cramp Lady!
I walk back to her car and ask how she is feeling. She says, "I'm fine, I went home and took some....meds." Then she gave me a little wink.....
Hoooo kay, I don't want this woman driving behind me! I go a little faster than normal to put some distance betwixt her and I.
 Princeton.

As I was leaving Princeton these (MGs I think) came down the road. I turned around and followed them to the gas station. They were having a group drive. I think there were maybe twenty cars.
I didn't happen to see the two that were next to me at the 100 Mile house motel last week.

On this trip I crossed into Canada twice, and dealt with three (female) Canadian border guards. Both times and all three guards were.....unpleasant.  So as I approached the US border and saw a female at the head of my line I thought, 'Oh boy, here we go again.'
BUT, when it was my turn at the gate imagine my surprise when she acted as if she were actually human!
She was businesslike, and commanded total respect yet still somehow managed to remain ... well, un-bitchy.
Thank you US border guards!
(I'm sure both genders are trained the same and act the same, it just so happens I only dealt with females.)

Back in the USA!

I Stop in Tanasket for a late lunch.

Imagine my gastronomic joy when I see they serve Ivar's by the Sea clam chowder!
If you ride through Tanasket, I highly recommend Shannon's!

On I go, stopping for the night at Republic, Washington.

Off the next morning via Coeur D'Alane, Idaho. I briefly get on I-90 and exit at #34 and I go south on SRs 3,
6, and 9.
Somewhere along that route I stop at a 3 way stop sign. There is a man in front of me in a truck. I can see he is eyeballing me or the bike, I thought maybe my headlight was out or something like that. But then he turns left, and I wait for a car then I turn left. As I round the next corner that man has pulled over and is waving me down. I stop and meet another Strom owner! We have a great chat about all things Strom, and then go on our ways. I told him thanks for flagging me down I enjoyed the conversation.
But - darn my poor memory, I can't remember his name (Mike maybe...), his screen name is Dynomite I think... I hope he reads this and corrects me!

I call home and tell my wife about this incident and she tells me, "It's a good thing you were on your bike and not in the rental car or that wouldn't have happened.." You know, she's right!

I make it to Kooskia, Idaho and stay the night there at the Motor Inn, I'm a repeat customer, they have a decent room at a great price.

And there are only 590 miles between Kooskia and my own bed soooo......
I'm up and on the road early Sunday.

This scene was a few miles south of Kooskia.

Grange, Idaho
Somewhere along the way, two old cars and drivers, and passengers out having fun!
And.............home! I go inside to find some steamy hot chicken soup waiting for me. THAT hits the spot!
Wow, what a fantastic trip!
4,474 wonderful miles... well, ok the rainy ones weren't all THAT wonderful, but they were still pretty darn nice.
I meet so many nice people....you really do meet the nicest people on a ....Suzuki. (If you catch that reference, you are really old!)
Saw a LOT of animals, bear, moose, deer, wolf (I think) and A RABBIT!!!
I'm still bummed about not getting North Dakota, but that just means I'll have to take a trip later this summer.....
British Columbia is absolutely beautiful! Go there, ride there, come home happy!
There is very little, and they are very minor things that I would change about this trip. It just might be the best moto trip I've ever taken. Life is GRAND!

{and that completes the six posts about my trip to Alaska. If you somehow were able to suffer through all six before you read this part, let me know and the next time we ride lunch is on me!}
